Understanding Permissions

Your privacy is the foundation of ArkScribe. This guide explains what permissions the extension asks for and why they are necessary for it to work.

My Commitment to Your Privacy

ArkScribe is built on a "privacy-first" principle. I never collect, store, or transmit your personal data, browsing history, or guide content. Everything happens locally on your computer. The permissions I request are strictly for the extension's core functionality.

1. storage

  • Why it's needed: This permission allows ArkScribe to save your guides directly in your browser's local storage.
  • Your Privacy: This is not cloud storage. The data is stored only on your computer, and you have full control over it. It is never sent to my servers or any third party. This is the key permission that enables ArkScribe to work offline.

2. activeTab

  • Why it's needed: This permission gives the extension temporary access to the tab you are currently using when you click the extension icon. It's needed to know the URL and title of the page you're on, so it can be included in your guide.
  • Your Privacy: Access is temporary and only for the active tab. The extension does not have persistent access to your browsing history or activity on other tabs.

3. scripting

  • Why it's needed: This is the core permission that allows ArkScribe to detect actions like clicks and typing. It lets the extension inject a script into the page to observe these actions while recording is active.
  • Your Privacy: The script is only injected on the pages you are recording and only when you have explicitly started a recording session. It does not run in the background and does not track your activity when you are not recording.

4. unlimitedStorage

  • Why it's needed: By default, browser extensions have a limited amount of local storage space (around 5MB). This permission allows ArkScribe to request more space if needed, so you can create long, detailed guides with many high-resolution screenshots without running out of room.
  • Your Privacy: This does not grant access to your hard drive. It simply increases the storage quota available to the extension within the browser's secure, sandboxed environment. All data remains local to your machine.

5. notifications (Optional)

  • Why it's needed: This permission is requested to show you helpful notifications, such as when an export is complete or if an error occurs.
  • Your Privacy: This is only used to communicate status updates from the extension to you.

I believe in full transparency. If you have any other questions about my privacy practices, please don't hesitate to contact me.
